A Miracle in Haiti [Voodoo is not a fairy tale]

Kari, I want to thank you for letting me be a guest here again! I was a guest blogger last year on July 18, 2010, and God has done some AMAZING things!

I had written about a poor and destitute family, who was wrapped up in voodoo. All five of their children were malnourished, and all five had the red hair that is characteristic of voodoo. In the last 18 months, we have made multiple visits to this home, literally out in the middle of nowhere. It was the norm to find the babies on the dirt floor, covered in dried feces, the other children running naked, with no adults anywhere. There usually was no food in the house, no water, not even to wash off the babies.

We would bring food, wipes to wash off the babies, anything we could think of to help. One time we borrowed a broken pot so we could cook some rice, the kids said they had not eaten for two days.

We shared the Gospel with this family every chance we got. For 18 months.  But their nearest neighbor was the witch doctor, and he was controlling them. I admit that I got frustrated at times, seeing nothing change with them. But God works in his own time.

Now fast forward to one week ago. We were back out in that area, visiting with a family who had just lost a daughter to malnutrition. This mom and dad have had 5 children die from malnutrition. Can you imagine? Five?  You could see the hopelessness in the mom’s eyes. And her one year old son was already malnourished. So I was there with Pastor Clebert, and a deacon, to share some Hope with this family. We shared the Gospel with them, and sang, and then the father informed us that he was ready to turn his life over to Christ, he was finished with voodoo. His wife agreed with him. We then had the privilege of being with this couple as they prayed and reached out to God for the first time.

As we are doing this inside the hut, outside there is a lot of commotion going on. The family and neighbors outside were upset, they didn’t want any Christians in the area. The witch doctor was out there too. But this didn’t stop them from praying, and then gathering all of their voodoo fetishes and going out to the road to burn them. What a testimony!

As we were finishing up, a man came and told us that he was ready to accept Christ too, and would we come to his house. Can you believe it was the father of the family I wrote about last year? What an amazing God we serve!

We went to his hut the next morning, and he and his wife were ready and waiting for us. Before we left that morning, we had prayed for an opportunity to share with the witch doctor. At the stick and mud hut, this dear couple prayed to accept Christ, realizing voodoo was nothing but harmful to them. Just as we finished praying, guess who walked in? The witch doctor! He told us that God had told him to come, and he wanted to know more about God. So we were able to share with him on the spot, and he listened to us. He invited us to come to his home anytime. Wow!

So we went outside to burn the couples voodoo fetishes. The wife couldn’t find any matches, so the witch doctor ran to his hut, and brought back  some matches. To burn the fetishes he had sold this family!    I am confidant that God is preparing to do a work in this witch doctor, and in this community.

Last year I asked you all to pray with me, that God would save this family. He has answered that prayer. Now I am asking that you will pray with me again. That God will soften the witch doctor’s heart, and cause him to turn to the only Hope we have. I also ask that you pray that this entire community will turn to God, that they will burn their idols and fetishes.

I can’t wait to see what God does in the community of Bukironn this year!

PS: The family allowed us to cut off the kids red hair! They truly have a fresh start.
