If I lived in AFRICA I would be really scared…. LOOK!!
Today I was on the back deck & noticed something moving…. slithering across the yard. It was ENORMOUS!! I had an instant flash of… do we have big black poisonous snakes in our neck of the woods?? I knew it wasn’t a black mamba (ha) but couldn’t remember quick enough all the snakes I’d memorized at camp in the Ozarks! I decided to get a closer peek, but TOTALLY FREEEKED out when it coiled back at me. That bugger wanted to bite me.

Looks like a Black Rat Snake, based on underbelly coloring and defensive posture. Non-poisonous constrictors that eat rodents and other small pests. No worries, but he doesn't look too happy, does he?
That is a black rat snake. Scary looking for sure, but wonderful snakes. He eats all the critter's you don't want:)Although my husband would say the only good snake is a dead snake.
AAAHHH! The coiled up picture totally freaked me out! Eben would have LOVED seeing it though! He's taken to catching lizards and birds (yes! birds!) wherever we go and I find the whole thing completely terrifying. He's very gentle with them, but I'm of the mind that I don't want nature touching me…so I'm not going to be touching IT. We're going to AZ this week and I told him he's not to try catching ANYTHING there! He's been on the ranch since he was a baby though and I think my parents have done a good job of teaching him about the dangers there.I hope everyone was right and it was some sort of non poisonous thing. Even constrictors freak me out around my babies…and I think they can still bite even if it isn't poisonous, right?! Thanks for getting my heart beating a little faster. Can that be my cardio for the day? ;)Erica
